Snake in the City
After Caravaggio’s
St. John in the Wilderness
40” x 52.5”
Digital Painting

This is a full-scale study done digitally after a 16th century painting of St. John the Baptist by Caravaggio.  The story of St. John the baptist is that he went into the wilderness to preach with his staff.  Many paintings in the past were created with this subject matter, Caravaggio created more than one but this was his most famous.

I find it to be an interesting play, because I see the character of Snake Plissken (played by Kurt Russel) as a sort of derivative from this story of preaching in the wilderness.  Although Snake’s staff was an Uzi, or a pump action shotgun as presented here.  This is also a self portrait.
